Description
The Pink Althea (Hibiscus syriacus) is a stunning deciduous shrub that brings a soft, romantic touch to any garden. Known for its beautiful pink flowers, this hardy shrub blooms prolifically from mid-summer to fall, providing vibrant color and attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. Ideal for borders, hedges, or as a specimen plant, the Pink Althea offers both beauty and ease of care, making it a favorite among gardeners.
Unique Features:
- Soft Pink Blooms: Produces large, delicate pink flowers with a subtle, attractive fragrance, offering a gentle burst of color to your landscape.
- Pollinator-Friendly: The open, cup-shaped flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, adding life and movement to your garden.
- Long Blooming Period: Blooms consistently throughout the summer and into the fall, providing months of vibrant color.
- Low Maintenance: Easy to grow and care for, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners.
Mature Size:
- Height: 8–10 feet
- Spread: 6–8 feet
USDA Hardiness Zones:
- Zones 7–9
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers full sun to part shade, with full sun encouraging the best flowering display.
- Soil: Thrives in well-drained, loamy or sandy soil. Tolerates a range of soil types, including moderately dry conditions.
- Water: Water regularly during the first few years of growth, especially during dry spells. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires less frequent watering.
- Pruning: Prune in early spring to remove dead or damaged wood and shape the plant. Regular deadheading can encourage additional blooms, but this shrub blooms primarily on new growth.
- Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage strong growth and abundant flowers.
- Pests/Disease: Generally resistant to pests and diseases, but monitor for aphids or Japanese beetles. Treat with an organic insecticide if needed, and ensure proper air circulation to avoid fungal issues.
The Pink Althea is an excellent choice for anyone looking to add a pop of soft color to their landscape. With its low-maintenance care, long blooming season, and ability to attract pollinators, it’s a perfect addition to garden beds, borders, or even container plantings. Bring a touch of elegance and charm to your garden with the Pink Althea.

How to Plant

STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
