Description

Granny Smith Apple Trees produce a lush green fruit with a tart taste and a firm and crisp texture. The apples are medium to large-sized and ripen in August through September. They are excellent keepers once they've been picked, and are perfect for eating fresh or for cooking with. Granny Smiths require 400 chill hours and are self-pollinators. For planting, apple trees prefer full sun and slightly acidic soil. At maturity, the Granny Smith apple can reach a height of 12-14 feet and width of 14-16 feet.

USDA ZONES: Zone 6, Zone 7, Zone 8.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Water apple trees regularly, making sure to keep the soil moist without drowning the tree. Prune in the winter while the tree is growing and in the summer once the tree has reached its desired height.

Indestructible

It spent its first year (2022) in a pot in a community garden where I couldn’t get to it to water it & survived a very hot summer when almost all my other plants died. Year two, it was planted in ground at my new house (NJ zone 7b) but was chewed almost to the graft by my dog & it still bounced back vigorously. It’s spring of year three now and it’s blossoming!

Granny Apple tree purchase from the state of Alabama

The Granny Smith Apple tree arrived intact to our home and looked healthy. We planted the tree immediately, evening rain was in the forcast. Fourteen days later, with additional watering, the apple tree is showing signs of taking root. There are new leaves developing on the Granny Smith. 2/19/23
