Description

The Newton Pippin Apple, also known as Newtown Pippin or Albemarle Pippin, is one of America’s oldest and most distinguished apple varieties. Originating in New York in the early 1700s, it quickly became a colonial favorite — famously enjoyed by Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. This heirloom apple is prized for its distinctive tart-sweet flavor, firm texture, and remarkable ability to improve in taste after storage. With its greenish-yellow skin and crisp, aromatic flesh, the Newton Pippin remains a top choice for both fresh eating and traditional cider making.

Key Features

Rich, Complex Flavor: Distinctive balance of tart and sweet with notes of pineapple and honey; flavor deepens and mellows after storage.
Excellent Storage Life: Keeps for months, improving in texture and sweetness during storage.
Versatile Use: Outstanding for fresh eating, baking, and premium cider production.
Historic Significance: A celebrated heirloom variety once exported to England as a delicacy.
Attractive Appearance: Medium to large greenish-yellow apples, sometimes blushed with russet near the stem.

Care Instructions

Sunlight: Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) to achieve best fruit color and flavor.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile loam with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0); avoid poorly drained sites.
Watering: Maintain steady moisture during fruit development; mulch to conserve water and suppress weeds.
Pruning: Prune annually in late winter to open the canopy and promote air circulation and strong fruiting wood.
Pollination: Requires cross-pollination with another mid- to late-season variety such as ‘Granny Smith,’ ‘Jonathan,’ or ‘Wolf River’ for best yields.

Landscape Uses

• Perfect for home orchards, historic gardens, and heirloom collections.
• Excellent for fresh eating, pies, sauces, and hard cider.
• Provides year-round beauty with fragrant spring blooms, lush summer foliage, and late-harvest fruit.

The Newton Pippin Apple is a living piece of American history — admired for its refined flavor, aromatic character, and superb storage ability. Whether enjoyed fresh from the tree or aged for richer sweetness, it continues to embody the timeless excellence of classic orchard heritage.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Water apple trees regularly, making sure to keep the soil moist without drowning the tree. Prune in the winter while the tree is growing and in the summer once the tree has reached its desired height.
