Description

Tall Guy® is a moderate to fast growing, upright, columnar arborvitae. Tall Guy® matures quickly and has no gaps in the habit from multiple leaders like other multi-stem varieties. This evergreen thrives in warm climates, does equally well in cold climates, and is resistant to Passalora/Cercospora needle blight. Use Tall Guy® to create hedges or screens, or to anchor the landscape with some vertical appeal year-round.

Unique Features:

  • Fast Growth: Quickly reaches maturity, making it ideal for privacy screens and barriers.
  • Dense Foliage: Rich green, soft-textured needles provide a lush, full appearance year-round.
  • Low Maintenance: Requires minimal pruning to maintain its natural, upright form.
  • Versatile Use: Perfect for formal hedges, landscape accents, or natural fencing.
  • Cold Hardy: Thrives in cooler climates and withstands heavy snow and wind.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 8-12 feet
  • Spread: 2-3 feet

USDA Hardiness Zones:

  • Zones 4–8

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers full sun to part shade; 6+ hours of sunlight daily ensures robust growth.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils; tolerates clay and sandy soils.
  • Water: Water deeply and regularly during the first year to establish roots. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent watering during dry periods.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning required; trim lightly in late winter or early spring to shape or control size if desired.
  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth.
  • Pests/Disease: Resistant to most pests and diseases but monitor for bagworms or spider mites. Apply treatment as needed.

The Tall Guy Thuja is an excellent choice for homeowners and landscapers seeking a reliable, fast-growing evergreen that combines beauty with practical functionality. Its stately height, year-round greenery, and adaptability make it a standout addition to any garden or yard.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

To care for the Thuja , plant it in full sun to light shade with well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, then reduce frequency as it becomes drought-tolerant. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth. Minimal pruning is needed, but you can trim in early spring to maintain shape if desired. Space plants 2 feet apart for a dense privacy screen or hedge.
