Description

The Jersey Blueberry is a beloved and time-tested northern highbush variety celebrated for its reliability, vigorous growth, and exceptionally sweet berries. A favorite among home gardeners and commercial growers, Jersey is a perfect choice for those seeking a high-yielding, low-maintenance blueberry plant.

Key Features

  • Late-Season Harvest: Jersey berries ripen late in the season, extending your blueberry harvest into late summer.
  • Sweet Flavor: Known for its small-to-medium-sized, sugar-sweet fruit, perfect for snacking, baking, and preserving.
  • Cold Hardy: Thrives in colder climates, making it an excellent choice for northern growers.
  • Pollination Partner: While Jersey is self-pollinating, planting it near another northern highbush variety like Bluecrop or Blueray can enhance yields.
  • Ornamental Appeal: With its vibrant green foliage, creamy white spring flowers, and brilliant red fall color, Jersey offers year-round beauty.

Mature Size

  • Height: 6–8 feet
  • Spread: 4–6 feet

Chill Hours

  • Jersey blueberries require at least 800 chill hours

Care Instructions

  • Soil Requirements: Prefers acidic, well-draining soil with a pH of 4.5–5.5. Incorporate organic matter like peat moss to enhance soil health.
  • Sunlight: Plant in full sun for optimal berry production and plant vigor.
  • Watering: Maintain consistent moisture, especially during flowering and fruiting, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, acid-loving plant fertilizer in early spring and after harvest to support growth and fruiting.
  • Pruning: Prune annually in late winter to remove dead or weak branches and improve airflow and sunlight penetration.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and reduce weeds.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Blueberries need lots of sunlight and slightly acidic soil in order to thrive. If you want to create a hedgerow, plant blueberries 2-3 feet apart. Once planted, mulch 2-4 inches over roots. Heavily prune blueberries each year to encourage higher yields once the plant is established.
