Description

The North Star Cherry is a compact, self-fertile sour cherry tree known for its hardiness, high productivity, and delicious tart fruit. Developed at the University of Minnesota, this dwarf tree thrives in colder climates, making it an excellent choice for northern growers. Its bright red cherries are perfect for pies, preserves, and fresh eating for those who enjoy a tangy bite. In spring, the tree is covered in fragrant white blossoms, attracting pollinators and adding ornamental beauty to the landscape.

Key Features:

  • Cold-Hardy & Reliable: Thrives in northern climates and withstands harsh winters.
  • Self-Fertile: Does not require a pollinator but produces more fruit when planted near another cherry tree.
  • Heavy Yields: Produces abundant bright red cherries with firm, juicy flesh.
  • Dwarf Growth Habit: Small stature makes it perfect for backyard orchards and container growing.
  • Spring Beauty: Covered in fragrant white flowers that attract bees and butterflies.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 8–12 feet
  • Spread: 8–10 feet
  • Growth Rate: Moderate

USDA Hardiness Zones:

  • Zones: 4–8

Care Instructions:

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun (6+ hours daily) for optimal fruit production.
  • Soil: Grows best in well-drained, loamy soil with a pH between 6.0–7.0.
  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently, especially during dry periods.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead wood and improve air circulation.
  • Pest & Disease Resistance: Naturally resistant to many cherry diseases, including leaf spot.

Landscape Uses:

  • Perfect for small yards due to its compact size.
  • Great for edible landscaping, providing both beauty and delicious fruit.
  • Ideal for making cherry pies, preserves, and juices.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
