Description
The LSU Purple Fig (Ficus carica), developed by Louisiana State University, is a standout variety known for its adaptability, disease resistance, and high yield. Perfect for home gardens, this fig tree produces sweet, richly flavored purple fruits that are delicious fresh or dried. With its compact size and low maintenance needs, the LSU Purple Fig is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a reliable and productive fruit tree.
Key Features
- Exceptional Fruit: Medium-sized purple figs with a sweet, rich flavor and smooth texture.
- High Yield: Produces two to three harvests per year in warm climates, ensuring an extended supply of fresh figs.
- Disease Resistance: Naturally resistant to common fig diseases like rust and nematodes, making it a low-maintenance option.
- Compact Growth: Ideal for smaller gardens or containers, making it accessible for a variety of landscapes.
- Cold Tolerance: Hardy for a fig variety, thriving in southern climates and tolerating brief cold snaps.
Mature Size
- Height: 6–10 feet (can be pruned to maintain size).
- Spread: 6–8 feet.
USDA Hardiness Zones
- Zones 8–10. (May survive in Zone 7 with winter protection.)
Care Instructions
- Soil Requirements: Prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid waterlogged areas.
- Sunlight: Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) for optimal fruit production.
- Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once mature, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent watering during dry spells.
- Fertilization: Use a balanced fertilizer in early spring and again in midsummer for optimal growth. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can hinder fruit production.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape the tree, remove dead wood, and encourage new growth.
- Winter Protection: In cooler zones, apply a thick layer of mulch around the base and consider wrapping young trees to protect them from frost.
- Pest & Disease Management: Monitor for fig beetles, scale, and root rot. The LSU Purple’s natural disease resistance simplifies care.

How to Plant
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
