Description

The Black Diamond® Purely Purple Crape Myrtle is a striking variety that stands out with its dark, almost black foliage and vibrant purple blooms. The striking contrast between the deep foliage and the brilliant flowers creates a captivating visual in your garden. The blooms reach their peak productivity during the summer and fall months, adding a burst of color to your landscape. With an intermediate growth habit, this crape myrtle grows to 10–12 feet tall and can be used as a specimen or for mass plantings. It's perfect for lining driveways, fences, or planted in a container on your deck or patio, as long as the container is at least 12 inches in diameter.

Unique Features:

  • Vibrant Purple Blooms: Striking purple flowers that contrast beautifully with the dark foliage.
  • Dark Foliage: Black foliage provides a unique backdrop to the bright blooms.
  • Intermediate Growth Habit: Reaches 10–12 feet tall, making it ideal for small spaces or mass plantings.
  • Low-Maintenance: Drought-tolerant, mildew-resistant, and easy to care for once established.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 10–12 feet
  • Spread: 4–5 feet

USDA Hardiness Zones:

  • Zones 7–9
  • Zones 2–5 (if planted in a container and brought indoors during winter)

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Requires full sun for optimal growth and vibrant blooms.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
  • Water: Water regularly during dry periods, but avoid overwatering once established as it is drought-tolerant.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and shape the tree.
  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage strong growth and vibrant flowering.
  • Pests/Disease: Mildew-resistant and generally pest-free, though monitor for occasional aphids or scale.
  • Spacing: Space trees 4–5 feet apart for optimal growth and air circulation.
  • Winter Protection (Zone 6): Requires winter protection in Zone 6, as it may die back to the ground and bloom sparsely without it.

The Black Diamond® Purely Purple Crape Myrtle is a showstopper in any landscape. Its dark foliage and vibrant purple blooms add drama and color, while its low-maintenance nature makes it an easy-to-care-for addition to your garden. Whether used as a specimen, hedge, or container plant, it will bring lasting beauty and elegance to your outdoor space.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

To help crape myrtles retain water, mulch with organic matter 2-3 inches deep, making sure to keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk. Water regularly until established. Remove dead branches any time and prune weak branches back in the spring in order to encourage a strong and productive tree. Fertilize once per year as new growth emerges.

Beautiful Color and Shape

This was my first purchase from Plant Me Green and they did not disappoint.
I was worried about the quality and condition of the tree since it was purchased sight unseen until it got here. All my concerns were for not. The tree was healthy, very much alive and thriving and the shape was nice and even all the way around.
I just planted it in the ground yesterday and the hardest decision was what side looked best from our patio. It looked great from any direction so we had to vote amongst the whole family to determine orientation .
My second order just got here today.....I'm sure there will be more
