Key Features

  • Stunning Foliage: Lustrous dark green leaves with a distinctive, velvety brown underside that adds texture and color year-round.
  • Fragrant Blooms: Large, creamy white flowers, up to 8 inches in diameter, bloom from late spring to summer, filling the air with a sweet, enchanting fragrance.
  • Compact Growth: Smaller than traditional Southern Magnolias, making it ideal for urban or suburban landscapes.
  • Cold-Hardy: Excellent adaptability, tolerating USDA Zones as cold as Zone 6 with proper care.
  • Versatile Usage: Ideal as a specimen tree, privacy screen, or backdrop in formal and informal gardens.

Mature Size

  • Height: 30–50 feet
  • Spread: 15–25 feet

USDA Hardiness Zones

  • Zones 6–9

Care Instructions

  • Soil Requirements: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils but tolerates a range of soil types, including clay.
  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Ensure at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily for optimal growth and blooming.
  • Watering: Requires consistent moisture, especially during establishment. Mature trees are moderately drought-tolerant but benefit from regular watering during dry periods.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning needed. Remove dead or damaged branches as necessary and shape in late winter if desired.
  • Mulching: A layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture and regulate root temperature, particularly in colder zones.
  • Pest & Disease Management: Resistant to most pests and diseases. Monitor for occasional scale or leaf spot and treat promptly.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Plant in well-drained, acidic soil and in full sun or partial shade. Make sure the tree has plenty of room to grow to its full size. Mulch creating a 3-4 inch layer at base but leave room at the trunk of the tree. Water regularly for the first few years until your magnolia is established. Magnolias need 40-80 inches of water every year. Prune, as needed, in winter after bloom period.

Excellent Quality - better than described

I purchased two Bracken Brown Beauty Magnolia trees. The trees arrived in excellent condition: very healthy and packaged well. This was the first time that I have ordered from Plant Me Green, and what I received was the best quality trees that I have ever purchased over the internet -- and I have purchased many trees in the past. I look forward to purchasing more from this company.

Packaging

Box arrived quickly an undamaged. With one issue the magnolia last a few inches taller then the box. When I opened the box I found that the leader was broken about 2 inches down. Being new to magnolia I am not sure how this will harm future growth and shape. The plant looks very healthy.

Bracken's Brown

We ordered the Bracken's Brown Magnolia. The 2 foot tall tree arrived at my house within the given timeframe and just as I'd ordered it. There was a broken branch and a sliced leaf, but otherwise the tree was healthy and ready for planting. I would use Plant Me Green again.
