Apple Trees - Haralson
USDA Hardiness Zones: 3-6.
Description
The Haralson Apple is a classic northern variety celebrated for its firm texture, pleasantly tart flavor, and remarkable cold hardiness. Developed at the University of Minnesota in 1913, it quickly became a staple for home growers across cold climates. Its bright red skin, crisp flesh, and rich, tangy flavor make it perfect for pies, ciders, and fresh eating by those who enjoy a sharper apple taste. Reliable and long-lived, the Haralson is a top choice for northern orchards and cold-weather gardeners.
Key Features
• Tart Flavor: Distinctively tangy with a balanced sweetness — outstanding for baking, cider, and snacking for those who prefer a zesty apple.
• Firm Texture: Dense, crisp flesh that holds its shape exceptionally well in pies and cooked dishes.
• Attractive Skin: Bright red skin, often with subtle striping and a hint of green near the stem.
• Cold Hardy: One of the hardiest apple varieties available, thriving in northern regions where others may struggle.
• Reliable Yields: Produces consistent crops of medium-to-large apples year after year.
Mature Size
• Height: 12–15 feet (standard); 8–10 feet (semi-dwarf)
• Spread: 10–15 feet
• Growth Rate: Moderate
USDA Hardiness Zones
• Zones 3–6
Chill Hours
• Requires approximately 1,000 chill hours for optimal fruiting.
Care Instructions
• Sunlight: Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) to develop rich color and full flavor.
• Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic loam; tolerates a variety of soils with good drainage.
• Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during fruit development and dry spells; avoid soggy conditions.
• Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove crossing branches and open the canopy for light and air circulation.
• Pollination: Requires cross-pollination with a compatible variety such as ‘Honeycrisp,’ ‘Cortland,’ or ‘McIntosh’ for best fruit set.
Landscape Uses
• Excellent for home orchards, cold-climate gardens, and northern growers seeking dependable performance.
• Ideal for pies, sauces, cider, and fresh eating for tart apple lovers.
• Adds four-season beauty with fragrant white spring blossoms, vibrant red fruit, and golden fall foliage.
With its tart flavor, firm flesh, and legendary cold tolerance, the Haralson Apple stands as a hallmark of northern orchards. Whether baked into a perfect pie or enjoyed crisp from the tree, it offers both hardiness and heritage — a true classic for generations of growers.

How to Plant

STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
