Description

The Wealthy Apple is a beloved heirloom variety celebrated for its exceptional hardiness, balanced flavor, and early bearing habit. Introduced in Minnesota in 1868 by Peter Gideon, this historic apple was one of the first varieties to thrive in northern climates, paving the way for modern cold-hardy apple breeding. Wealthy’s crisp, juicy texture and rich sweet-tart flavor make it a versatile favorite for both fresh eating and baking. Its reliable performance and nostalgic character continue to make it a staple in home orchards across the country.

Key Features

Rich, Balanced Flavor: A harmonious blend of sweetness and tartness with subtle strawberry-like notes — refreshing and aromatic.
Juicy, Crisp Texture: Tender, fine-grained flesh ideal for fresh eating, pies, sauces, and cider.
Attractive Appearance: Medium-sized fruit with bright red blush over a pale green-yellow base — beautifully striped and eye-catching.
Cold Hardy: Exceptionally hardy and reliable, performing well even in northern regions with harsh winters.
Early Bearing: Produces fruit at a young age, often within 3–4 years after planting, with consistent annual crops.

Zones 4–8

Chill Hours

• Requires approximately 800–1,000 chill hours for optimal flowering and fruit development.

Care Instructions

Sunlight: Prefers full sun exposure (6–8 hours daily) for best fruit color and sugar accumulation.
Soil: Thrives in well-drained, fertile loam with a slightly acidic pH (6.0–6.8); tolerates clay or sandy soils if drainage is good.
Watering: Maintain steady moisture during the growing season; avoid waterlogging or extended drought.
Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape the canopy and promote good air circulation and light penetration.
Pollination: Requires a compatible pollinator such as ‘McIntosh,’ ‘Cortland,’ or ‘Honeycrisp’ for heavy fruit production.

Landscape Uses

• Excellent for home orchards, heritage gardens, and cold-climate fruit plantings.
• Ideal for fresh eating, pies, applesauce, and sweet cider.
• Offers four-season beauty with spring blossoms, vivid red fruit, and golden autumn foliage.

With its storied history, reliable hardiness, and delightful flavor, the Wealthy Apple remains one of the most treasured classic apples for home growers. Whether enjoyed crisp from the tree or baked into a fragrant pie, it delivers an authentic taste of traditional orchard goodness season after season.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Water apple trees regularly, making sure to keep the soil moist without drowning the tree. Prune in the winter while the tree is growing and in the summer once the tree has reached its desired height.
