Description

The Flordahome Pear is a low-chill, heat-tolerant pear variety ideal for Southern orchards. Known for its smooth, yellow-green skin and crisp, juicy flesh, this early-ripening pear is perfect for fresh eating, canning, and preserves. Its reliable production and excellent disease resistance make it a top choice for growers in warm climates. Unlike many pear varieties, Flordahome thrives in regions with mild winters, requiring only 150–300 chill hours to set fruit.

Unique Features:

  • Low-Chill Variety: Requires only 150–300 chill hours, making it perfect for Southern growers.
  • Heat-Tolerant and Adaptable: Thrives in warm climates where other pears may struggle.
  • Sweet and Juicy Fruit: Produces medium-sized, yellow-green pears with crisp, flavorful flesh.
  • Reliable and Disease-Resistant: Offers excellent resistance to common pear diseases, including fire blight.
  • Early Season Harvest: Ripens early in the summer, providing one of the first pear harvests of the season.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 15–20 feet
  • Spread: 12–15 feet

USDA Hardiness Zones:

  • Zones 7–9

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Requires full sun for the best fruit production.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, loamy soil but adapts to a variety of soil types.
  • Water: Provide regular watering, especially during dry spells, to support healthy fruit development.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to maintain shape and encourage airflow.
  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring for vigorous growth and fruiting.
  • Pollination: Requires a pollinator such as Pineapple Pear or Hood Pear for optimal fruit production.

The Flordahome Pear is an excellent choice for Southern gardeners looking for a reliable, low-chill pear tree with sweet, juicy fruit. With its adaptability, early ripening, and disease resistance, this variety will provide years of delicious harvests.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

In order to thrive, fruiting pears need sun and water. For the best results, plant in well-drained soil. Prune pears in late winter. In particular, prune in the middle of the tree to make room for air and light circulation.
