Description

The Kieffer Pear is a hardy, disease-resistant pear variety known for its crisp texture, sweet-tart flavor, and excellent storage capabilities. Often prized for its ability to thrive in warmer climates, the Kieffer pear produces medium to large, yellow fruit with a slightly russeted skin and a robust, spicy flavor that intensifies as the fruit ripens. Its firm texture makes it ideal for canning, preserves, and baking, but it can also be enjoyed fresh when fully ripened. This variety is a low-maintenance tree, resistant to common pear diseases such as fire blight, and provides a bountiful harvest year after year.

Unique Features:

  • Sweet-Tart Flavor: A unique combination of sweetness and tanginess with a spicy undertone, perfect for fresh eating or cooking.
  • Firm Texture: Known for its firm texture, making it ideal for canning, preserves, pies, and other baked goods.
  • Fire Blight Resistance: Highly resistant to fire blight, reducing the need for excessive maintenance and enhancing long-term tree health.
  • Storage-Friendly: Known for its ability to store well, allowing you to enjoy its harvest long after picking.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 15–20 feet
  • Spread: 12–15 feet

USDA Hardiness Zones:

  • Zones 4–9

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers full sun to promote optimal growth and fruit production.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained, loamy soil but can adapt to a variety of soil types.
  • Water: Water regularly during the growing season to maintain healthy fruit development.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or weak branches and encourage better airflow through the tree.
  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and fruiting.
  • Pollination: Requires a cross-pollinator such as Bartlett, Orient, or Tenn to produce a fruitful harvest.

The Kieffer Pear is a reliable and productive tree that offers both ornamental and culinary value. Its exceptional disease resistance, excellent storage ability, and crisp, flavorful fruit make it a fantastic addition to any home orchard or garden.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

In order to thrive, fruiting pears need sun and water. For the best results, plant in well-drained soil. Prune pears in late winter. In particular, prune in the middle of the tree to make room for air and light circulation.
