Description

The Santina Cherry is a premium early-season variety prized for its exceptionally sweet, dark red fruit and semi-upright growth habit. As one of the first cherries to ripen in the season, it offers a delicious harvest of large, firm, and flavorful cherries perfect for fresh eating, baking, and preserves. With its high productivity and excellent disease resistance, Santina is a top choice for home orchards and commercial growers alike.

  • Self-Sterile: Requires a pollination partner like Bing, Rainier, or Van Cherry for fruit production.
  • Cold-Hardy & Productive: Performs well in cool climates while offering high yields of quality fruit.
  • Compact Growth Habit: Semi-upright and moderately vigorous, making it suitable for small orchards or backyard planting.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 15–20 feet
  • Spread: 10–12 feet
  • Growth Rate: Moderate

USDA Hardiness Zones:

  • Zones: 5–8

Care Instructions:

  • Sunlight: Requires full sun (6+ hours daily) for best fruit production.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, loamy soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0.
  • Watering: Water regularly during establishment and fruiting; drought-tolerant once mature.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to maintain shape, improve airflow, and encourage fruiting.
  • Pest & Disease Management: Naturally resistant to cracking; monitor for common cherry pests and use organic sprays if needed.

Landscape Uses:

  • Excellent addition to home orchards for an early-season sweet cherry harvest.
  • Great for edible landscaping, providing spring blossoms followed by delicious fruit.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide
