Description

The Dahoon Holly is a small, low-maintenance, broadleaf, evergreen tree with a dense, pyramidal growth pattern. It can reach 30 feet in height and spreads of around 15 feet. These hollies grow light green ovate leaves that darken with age and produce small white flowers followed by red berries in the fall and winter months. The berries of dahoon holly, like many other holly species, contain saponins that are mildly toxic to humans, causing digestive upset if the berries are consumed. The toxicity to dogs, cats, and horses is similarly mild. It gladly accepts shaping through hard pruning and has even been used in bonsai culture. Native to the southeastern United States, they enjoy full sun and consistently moist soil. The rounded crown of the Dahoon is heavily branched at maturity which makes these trees a fine choice for borders, hedges, or specimens for many years to enjoy!

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

After planting, water your tensaw regularly, keeping its soil moist to 1 inch deep during the first growing season. In the summer, water at least once a week. You should also prune in the winter for best results and heavy pruning is ok. A Tensaw holly can be planted anytime but spring and summer is best so it can start to establish itself before the winter in colder climates.
