Description

The AU Producer Plum is a reliable, heavy-bearing Japanese plum developed by Auburn University for excellent productivity and disease resistance. This variety produces medium to large reddish-purple fruit with sweet, amber-yellow flesh that’s ideal for fresh eating, preserves, or desserts. Blooming in early spring with fragrant white flowers, AU Producer brings both ornamental beauty and delicious summer harvests to the landscape.

Key Features:

  • Sweet & Juicy Fruit: Medium to large reddish-purple plums with flavorful yellow flesh.

  • High Yields: Bred for consistent and abundant production year after year.

  • Disease Resistant: Excellent resistance to bacterial leaf spot and other common plum diseases.

  • Spring Blooms: Attractive white blossoms in early spring bring pollinators to the garden.

  • Pollination Required: Requires another Japanese plum variety (like AU Rosa or Methley) for cross-pollination.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 15–20 feet

  • Spread: 15–20 feet

  • Growth Rate: Moderate

USDA Hardiness Zones:

  • Zones: 6–9

Care Instructions:

  • Sunlight: Requires full sun (6+ hours daily) for optimal fruit production.

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0.

  • Watering: Keep soil moist, especially during fruit development; drought-tolerant once established.

  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape and improve air circulation.

  • Pollination: Needs a second Japanese plum variety for successful fruiting.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Plant in well-drained soil, water regularly, prune for shape, apply fertilizer in spring.
