Description

Willow oak is a deciduous oak with willow-like leaves. It is an excellent, large shade tree. Its fine texture contrasts with the coarseness of most other red oaks making it one of its best ornamental features. It is one of the best oaks for avenue plantings or large residences. Willow oak is a fast-growing oak that transplants easily and is tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions. The leaves appear bright green to yellow and then turn russet in the fall.  Its acorn matures in two years. With age, the willow oak becomes a stately tree. It is a superior choice where space permits a large oak tree. It has a medium growth-rate and grows to 40-60 feet tall with a 30-40 foot spread. It is hardy in Zones 5-9.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Plant oaks in an area where they have plenty of room to grow to their full size. Once established, oaks need very little maintenance. Since they are drought tolerant, they rarely need extra watering. They also rarely need pruning. If there are dead limbs, however, prune in winter.

My Willow Oak sapling (2' - 3') arrived as advertised, neatly and securely packaged for delivery. However, the tree showed signs of a leaf rust out of the box and was clipped at the top. Undaunted, I very carefully planted it in an excellent sun location according to the instructions and re-pegged it for wind protection. It has been in the ground for three weeks and the leaves have all but shed, as expected in an Idaho fall climate. So, the verdict is out! I will have to await the 2024 Spring to see if it will survive. This particular tree came from the Florida location. I cannot imagine a more differential climate change for such a tree. But we have a rich, volcanic topsoil here in the Snake River Plain (Idaho Falls) that naturally provides a healthy bedding. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
