Description

The Black Mission Fig is a beloved heirloom variety prized for its outstanding flavor, productivity, and adaptability. Known for its deep purplish-black skin and rich, sweet interior, this fig tree is a staple for home gardeners and commercial growers alike. With its robust growth, dual harvests, and attractive appearance, the Black Mission Fig is as versatile as it is delicious.

Key Features

  • Delicious Fruit: Produces medium to large figs with dark purple-black skin and a strawberry-pink interior. The sweet, honeyed flavor is perfect for fresh eating, drying, or culinary uses like baking and preserves.
  • Extended Harvest: Enjoy two bountiful harvests – a smaller breba crop in early summer and a larger main crop in late summer to fall.
  • Hardy and Productive: Highly productive and adaptable, thriving in a variety of growing conditions.
  • Self-Pollinating: No need for a second tree; Black Mission Figs reliably produce abundant fruit on their own.
  • Historic Heritage: A variety with roots dating back centuries, originating in Spain and brought to California in the 18th century.

Mature Size

  • Height: 10–30 feet (can be pruned to a manageable size)
  • Spread: 10–30 feet

USDA Hardiness Zones

  • Zones 7–10

Care Instructions

  • Soil Requirements: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0).
  • Sunlight: Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) for optimal growth and fruit production.
  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially during the growing season. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent overwatering.
  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced fertilizer in early spring and mid-summer to support vigorous growth and fruiting.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape the tree, encourage new growth, and maintain a manageable size.
  • Winter Protection: In cooler regions, provide winter protection such as mulching around the base or wrapping the tree during extreme cold.
  • Pest & Disease Management: Watch for common pests like aphids, scale, or spider mites. Ensure good air circulation and proper watering to minimize fungal diseases.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Plant fig trees in loamy soil and in a northern exposure. They need plenty of sunlight and room in order to grow and thrive. Fertilize once a year. Fig trees only require light pruning which should be done in late winter.

I am so pleased with our new fig tree! She arrived dormant, and although that is how it was described, I was still concerned. However, we have had her about two weeks now and she is GLORIOUS. You can see leaf growth on the same day, from morning until afternoon. I’m so excited for the figs to come. Thank you!

Black Mission and Brown Turkey

I received a Black Mission and a Brown Turkey fig trees #7 pots in excellent condition. After a week in the ground they were well adjusted and looking great!!
In the same order, I got a eucalyptus Cinerea #1 pot in very sad condition. The tree is not dead, it just looks like the tree I would have never chosen had I’ve been at the nursery. I give a 5 star review to the figs and a 2 star review to the quality of the eucalyptus.

will wait and see

Was told this fig tree will pollinate the figs without the need for the wasps....The tree came packaged well . Will give a review in a year after the tree has time to produce figs that ripen.
