Apple Trees - Jonagold
USDA Hardiness Zones: 5-8.
Description
The Jonagold Apple is a highly regarded variety cherished for its large, juicy fruit and perfect balance of sweetness and tang. Developed in New York in 1943 from a cross between ‘Jonathan’ and ‘Golden Delicious,’ Jonagold combines the aromatic tartness of Jonathan with the smooth, honeyed sweetness of Golden Delicious. Its beautiful golden base and red-orange blush make it as attractive as it is delicious. Favored by both home gardeners and professional growers, Jonagold offers outstanding eating quality and versatility in the kitchen.
Key Features
• Rich, Sweet-Tart Flavor: Combines the best of its parents — the honeyed sweetness of Golden Delicious with the tangy brightness of Jonathan.
• Juicy, Crisp Texture: Firm yet tender flesh that delivers a refreshing crunch with every bite.
• Striking Appearance: Large fruit with a golden-yellow base overlaid by red and orange blush.
• Versatile Use: Excellent for fresh eating, baking, and cider — holds its flavor and texture beautifully when cooked.
• Dependable Producer: Offers heavy mid-season yields of high-quality fruit with consistent performance.

Care Instructions

• Watering: Maintain consistent moisture, especially during fruit set and ripening; avoid overly dry or soggy conditions.
• Pruning: Prune annually in late winter to remove crossing branches and improve air circulation.
• Pollination: Requires cross-pollination with another compatible variety such as ‘Honeycrisp,’ ‘Gala,’ or ‘Fuji’ for best yields.
Landscape Uses
• Excellent for home orchards, edible landscapes, and mixed fruit plantings.
• Ideal for fresh eating, pies, applesauce, and cider.
• Provides year-round appeal with fragrant spring blossoms, colorful autumn fruit, and ornamental form.

How to Plant

STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
