Apple Trees - Lodi
USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-8.
Description
The Lodi Apple is an early-ripening variety valued for its crisp texture, tart flavor, and excellent use in cooking and applesauce. Developed in New York in 1924 as a cross between ‘Yellow Transparent’ and ‘Montgomery,’ this apple matures weeks before most other varieties — making it one of the first fresh apples of the summer season. With its pale yellow skin, juicy flesh, and refreshing tartness, Lodi is ideal for those who enjoy the bright, classic taste of traditional cooking apples straight from the orchard.
Key Features
• Early Ripening: One of the earliest apples to harvest, typically ready in mid- to late summer.
• Tart, Refreshing Flavor: Bright, tangy taste ideal for making applesauce, pies, and preserves.
• Tender, Juicy Flesh: Creamy-white flesh that softens smoothly when cooked, producing excellent texture in sauces.
• Attractive Appearance: Medium-sized, round fruit with thin, pale yellow-green skin and a subtle sheen.
• Reliable Yields: Vigorous and productive tree that bears abundant crops even in variable climates.
Mature Size
• Height: 12–15 feet (standard); 8–10 feet (semi-dwarf)
• Spread: 10–15 feet
• Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
USDA Hardiness Zones
• Zones 4–8
Chill Hours
• Requires approximately 700–800 chill hours for optimal fruiting.
Care Instructions
• Sunlight: Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) to ensure healthy growth and full fruit development.
• Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile loam with a slightly acidic pH (6.0–6.8); amend heavier soils with organic matter for drainage.
• Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during bloom and fruit formation; mulch to retain moisture and regulate temperature.
• Pruning: Prune annually in late winter to maintain open canopy structure and promote strong fruiting wood.
• Pollination: Requires cross-pollination with another early to mid-season variety such as ‘Early Harvest,’ ‘Yellow Transparent,’ or ‘Gala’ for best yields.
Landscape Uses
• Perfect for home orchards, edible landscapes, and small-scale farms.
• Excellent for applesauce, baking, and canning; fair for fresh eating when freshly picked.
• Provides early summer interest with fragrant blossoms, fresh green foliage, and early ripening fruit.
The Lodi Apple brings the first taste of the apple season with its tart, old-fashioned flavor and smooth, sauce-ready texture. A dependable, early producer and a favorite among home cooks, it delivers bright orchard freshness when most apples are still weeks away from ripening.

How to Plant

STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
