Description

The Brigitta Blueberry is a standout variety known for its exceptional berry quality, extended storage life, and vigorous growth. Developed in Australia, Brigitta blueberry, is an older and very widely grown variety. This northern highbush blueberry is a perfect choice for gardeners who want a productive plant that yields delicious fruit late in the season.

Key Features

  • Late-Season Harvest: Brigitta produces large, firm, and sweet berries, typically ripening in late summer, extending your blueberry season.
  • Superior Storage: Renowned for its outstanding post-harvest shelf life, Brigitta berries remain fresh longer than most varieties, making them ideal for fresh consumption and shipping.
  • High Yields: Although Brigitta does not need a second variety for pollination purposes, a higher yield and larger fruit will result if a second variety is planted nearby.
  • Ornamental Appeal: Its upright growth habit and vibrant green foliage add beauty to the garden, while its fall colors provide seasonal interest.

Mature Size

  • Height: 4–6 feet
  • Spread: 3–5 feet

USDA Hardiness Zones

  • Zones 4–7

Care Instructions

  • Soil Requirements: Brigitta thrives in well-drained, acidic soil with a pH of 4.5–5.5. Incorporate organic material like peat moss to improve soil structure.
  • Sunlight: Full sun is essential for optimal fruit production and plant health.
  • Watering: Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during flowering and fruiting. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as blueberries are sensitive to overwatering.
  • Fertilization: Use a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring and again after harvest to support growth and fruiting.
  • Pollination: While Brigitta is self-pollinating, planting it near another northern highbush variety can increase yields.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or weak branches, encouraging better airflow and fruit production.
  • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base of the plant to insulate roots during colder months in its hardiness range.

Why Choose Brigitta Blueberry?

The Brigitta Blueberry is an exceptional choice for late-season blueberry enthusiasts. Its combination of high yields, flavorful berries, and long storage life makes it a must-have for home gardeners and commercial growers alike. Whether you’re enjoying them fresh, baking, or freezing for later, Brigitta delivers premium quality with every harvest.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Blueberries need lots of sunlight and slightly acidic soil in order to thrive. If you want to create a hedgerow, plant blueberries 2-3 feet apart. Once planted, mulch 2-4 inches over roots. Heavily prune blueberries each year to encourage higher yields once the plant is established.
