Known for its reliability and versatility, Duke is an excellent choice for home gardeners and commercial growers who desire a high-quality, productive blueberry with an extended harvest period.

Key Features

  • Early Ripening: Duke is one of the earliest blueberry varieties to ripen, allowing you to enjoy fresh, sweet berries in early to mid-summer.
  • Large, Firm Berries: The medium to large berries are firm and flavorful, with a delightful sweet-tart balance that’s perfect for fresh eating, preserves, or baking.
  • High Yields: Duke produces abundant clusters of berries, ensuring a generous harvest year after year with proper care.
  • Disease Resistance: This variety is known for its strong resistance to common blueberry diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners.
  • Adaptability: Duke thrives in a wide range of climates and soil types, making it an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.

Mature Size

  • Height: 4–5 feet
  • Spread: 3–4 feet

Care Instructions

  • Soil Requirements: Duke blueberries perform best in well-drained, acidic soil with a pH of 4.5–5.5. Improve soil structure with organic matter such as peat moss or pine bark.
  • Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6 hours per day) is necessary for optimal fruit production.
  • Watering: Blueberries prefer consistent moisture but are sensitive to waterlogged soil. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, while ensuring good drainage.
  • Fertilization: Use a fertilizer designed for acid-loving plants in early spring and again after the harvest to support growth and fruiting.
  • Pollination: While Duke is self-pollinating, planting it near other blueberry varieties can improve yield and berry quality.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or weak growth and encourage healthy, productive plants.
  • Winter Protection: Mulch around the base of the plant to insulate the roots and protect them from freezing temperatures during winter.

Why Choose Duke Blueberry?

The Duke Blueberry is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking an early, high-yielding blueberry variety. With its large, firm berries, early harvest, and disease resistance, Duke is a standout variety that provides delicious fruit and minimal care. Whether you enjoy fresh blueberries or use them for preserves and baking, Duke offers quality and reliability for any garden.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Blueberries need lots of sunlight and slightly acidic soil in order to thrive. If you want to create a hedgerow, plant blueberries 2-3 feet apart. Once planted, mulch 2-4 inches over roots. Heavily prune blueberries each year to encourage higher yields once the plant is established.
