Description

The Floribunda Crabapple, also known as the Japanese Flowering Crabapple, is a breathtaking ornamental tree prized for its profuse spring blooms, ornamental fruit, and stunning seasonal color changes. In early spring, this small deciduous tree bursts into a cloud of pink buds that open into a sea of delicate, fragrant pale pink to white blossoms, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. By late summer and fall, small bright red to yellow crabapples appear, providing visual interest and a food source for birds. Its arching branches and graceful form make it a standout addition to any landscape.

Key Features:

  • Abundant Blooms: One of the heaviest-flowering crabapples, with an explosion of pink-to-white blossoms in spring.
  • Ornamental Fruit: Small yellow-red crabapples persist into winter, feeding wildlife.
  • Seasonal Interest: Bright green summer foliage transitions to gold and orange hues in fall.
  • Graceful Form: A spreading, rounded canopy with an elegant, slightly weeping habit.
  • Pollinator-Friendly: Attracts bees and butterflies, making it a great choice for eco-friendly gardens.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 15–20 feet
  • Spread: 15–25 feet
  • Growth Rate: Moderate

USDA Hardiness Zones:

  • Zones: 4–8

Care Instructions:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun (at least 6 hours daily) for best flowering and fruiting.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, loamy soil but adapts to various soil types.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist for young trees; once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning required; remove dead or crossing branches in late winter.
  • Disease Resistance: Moderately resistant to common crabapple diseases like scab and fire blight, but good air circulation and proper spacing help prevent issues.

Landscape Uses:

  • Ideal for small gardens, mixed borders, and urban plantings
  • Excellent as a specimen tree or focal point
  • Great for pollinator gardens and bird-friendly landscapes

With its breathtaking spring flowers, ornamental fruit, and stunning fall color, the Floribunda Crabapple is a versatile and low-maintenance choice for adding year-round beauty to any garden or landscape.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Crabapple trees need ample sun and water to grow. They take about a year to establish, and during that time need regular watering. Water for 10 minutes once a week during the hot days of summer and spring, and then decrease that to once a month in fall and winter. Once crabapples are established they need little additional watering. Prune in the spring after the crabapple has stopped blooming.

Given one for our new house by my father in 1979 ! Now a monster beautiful specimen! Arborists that take care of our property say they have never see such an old beauty ! It is certainly a tree to admire ! Bees love it in bloom ! The sound is almost deafening by so many bees ! Fragrance is noticed even by neighbors! Birds love it all year ! Don’t know what we’ll do if it ever gives up ! Liquid kelp & liquid fertilizer given every other year to keep it healthy! Fantastic specimen tree !

Blooming one month after planting

Planted on 5-10-19 (a bit late for Austin,Tx). Pruned 50% of each limb 2 weeks later when leaves began browning. After another 2 weeks I have new leaf growth and blooms. Tree was larger than expected and looked good after shipping. This was my first online plant purchase and I would absolutely buy again.

Beautiful tree, in great shape

Planted it here in the fall, and will be excited to see it come back next spring. Tree arrived in great shape, and I have every confidence it will overwinter well.
