Description

The Red Maple is a tall maple with red and yellow autumn leaves that will provide your yard with shade in the summer and spectacular foliage in the fall. It has a medium to fast growth-rate and reaches 40-60 feet tall with a spread of about 40 feet. It is a deciduous tree, and its new leaves appear red-tinged before turning green with maturity. It is hardy in Zones 3-9 and prefers wet areas so be sure to plant in moist soil.

How to Plant

STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.

Care Guide

Maples prefer full sun or partial shade and may need to be staked when planted. Make sure to plant in an area where there is lots of room for the tree to grow. Create a 3-4 inch layer of mulch leaving room between the mulch and the tree's trunk. Water regularly after planting. Fertilize in spring and summer, and prune in late summer or early fall.

Trees for the future

We've been living on part of the farm that belonged to my in-laws since 1972. We've always planned to set out pecan trees, but are just now doing that - better late than never. The two pecans and one red maple arrived promptly and appear healthy.

Would buy again

First purchase and would buy again. Tree got lost in shipping and arrived damaged and nearly dead but customer service was excellent and shipped out a new tree right away!
