Description
The Macoun Apple is a beloved New England classic, admired for its exceptional flavor, rich color, and fine texture. Developed at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in 1923, it is a cross between ‘McIntosh’ and ‘Jersey Black.’ Macoun inherits the aromatic sweetness of McIntosh and the dense, crisp flesh of Jersey Black, resulting in an apple considered one of the finest for fresh eating. Its dark red-purple skin, snow-white flesh, and honeyed flavor make it a fall favorite among apple enthusiasts.
Key Features
• Exceptional Flavor: Intensely sweet with subtle wine-like undertones and a hint of berry — among the best-tasting apples for fresh eating.
• Crisp, Tender Texture: Juicy, fine-grained flesh offers a satisfying bite and creamy mouthfeel.
• Attractive Appearance: Deep red to purplish skin over a light green background; medium-sized, round-conic fruit.
• Excellent for Fresh Eating: Best enjoyed right off the tree for peak flavor and aroma.
• Cold-Hardy and Productive: Performs well in cooler regions and yields abundant crops with proper care.
Mature Size
• Height: 12–15 feet (standard); 8–10 feet (semi-dwarf)
• Spread: 10–15 feet
• Growth Rate: Moderate
USDA Hardiness Zones
• Zones 4–7
Chill Hours
• Requires approximately 800–1000 chill hours for optimal fruiting.
Care Instructions
• Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily) ensures proper color and sugar development.
• Soil: Prefers well-drained, moderately rich loam with pH 6.0–7.0; amend heavier soils with compost for improved structure.
• Watering: Maintain steady moisture, particularly during bloom and fruit development; avoid prolonged drought stress.
• Pruning: Prune annually in late winter to open the canopy, enhance airflow, and encourage new fruiting spurs.
• Pollination: Requires cross-pollination with compatible mid-season varieties such as ‘Cortland,’ ‘Honeycrisp,’ or ‘Liberty’ for best yields.
Landscape Uses
• Perfect for home orchards, northern climates, and fresh market growers.
• Ideal for fresh eating, salads, and desserts.
• Adds seasonal beauty with fragrant blossoms in spring and richly colored fruit in fall.
The Macoun Apple is cherished for its exceptional sweetness, aroma, and crisp bite — often ranked among the finest-flavored apples ever developed. A true gourmet variety, it rewards growers with premium fruit that embodies the essence of autumn orchard perfection.

How to Plant

STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
