Apple Trees - Scarlet Sentinel (Columnar)
USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-8.
Description
The Scarlet Sentinel Apple is a stunning columnar variety prized for its narrow, upright growth and showy clusters of glossy red fruit. Developed in Canada for modern, space-conscious gardeners, this tree grows like a vertical pillar, bearing apples close to its central trunk rather than on wide-spreading branches. Its fruit is sweet, aromatic, and pleasantly crisp — perfect for fresh eating or baking. Combining excellent productivity with elegant form, Scarlet Sentinel brings beauty, practicality, and delicious flavor to even the smallest landscapes.
Key Features
• Columnar Growth Habit: Naturally upright and compact, ideal for patios, courtyards, and small gardens.
• Sweet, Crisp Flavor: Delightfully juicy with a mild, honeyed sweetness balanced by gentle acidity.
• Brilliant Appearance: Bears dense clusters of bright red apples over a light yellow background — visually striking from summer into fall.
• Heavy Yields: Produces abundant, medium-sized apples along its vertical trunk each season.
• Low Maintenance: Compact shape requires little pruning or space — perfect for urban and container growing.
Mature Size
• Height: 8–10 feet
• Spread: 2–3 feet
• Growth Rate: Moderate
USDA Hardiness Zones
• Zones 4–8
Chill Hours
• Requires approximately 700–800 chill hours for dependable fruiting.
Care Instructions
• Sunlight: Requires full sun (6–8 hours daily) for best fruit color and sweetness.
• Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile loam with a pH of 6.0–7.0; adapts well to large containers with quality potting mix.
• Watering: Maintain consistent moisture, especially during fruit set; mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weeds.
• Pruning: Minimal pruning needed — remove only dead, damaged, or crossing shoots to preserve the tree’s narrow shape.
• Pollination: Requires cross-pollination with another compatible mid-season variety such as ‘Golden Sentinel,’ ‘Honeycrisp,’ or ‘Gala’ for optimal yields.
Landscape Uses
• Perfect for small gardens, balconies, patios, or tight planting spaces.
• Excellent for fresh eating, baking, and cider blending.
• Adds ornamental appeal with fragrant spring blossoms, glossy red fruit, and neat columnar form.
With its brilliant red fruit, crisp sweetness, and space-saving elegance, the Scarlet Sentinel Apple is a showpiece of modern orchard design. Whether planted in the ground or grown in containers, it offers year-round beauty and bountiful harvests — proof that great apples can thrive even in the most compact spaces.

How to Plant

STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
