Description

The Methley Plum is a popular and dependable Japanese plum variety, cherished for its abundant early-season harvests and richly colored, sweet-tasting fruit. With deep reddish-purple skin and juicy red flesh, Methley is excellent for fresh eating, jams, and desserts. It produces beautiful fragrant white blossoms in early spring and is self-fertile, making it a great option for smaller orchards or standalone planting.

Key Features:

  • Early Harvest: Produces ripe fruit in late spring to early summer, making it one of the earliest plums to enjoy.

  • Sweet & Juicy: Medium-sized plums with dark reddish-purple skin and red flesh—perfect for snacking or preserves.

  • Self-Fertile: Does not require another plum variety for pollination, though yields improve with a pollination partner.

  • Spring Beauty: Covered in white, fragrant blooms that attract pollinators.

  • Reliable Producer: Known for its consistent fruiting and adaptability to a range of climates.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 18-20 ft

  • Spread: 18-20 ft

  • Growth Rate: Moderate

USDA Hardiness Zones:

  • Zones: 5–9

Care Instructions:

  • Sunlight: Requires full sun (6+ hours daily) for best fruit development.

  • Soil: Grows well in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0.

  • Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, especially when fruit is developing.

  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to maintain airflow and shape.

  • Pest & Disease Resistance: Moderate resistance; monitor for common plum pests like aphids and borers.

Landscape Uses:

  • Excellent for home orchards and backyard edible landscapes

  • Great option for first-time growers thanks to its self-fertility and early fruiting

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

To encourage a vigorous and high yielding plum tree, thin the tree's fruit in May and again in July, removing the damaged and diseased fruit so that the rest have room to grow. Prune plum trees in the winter. Regularly remove suckers from around the base of the tree.

Ok, but late and tough delivery

Methley was planted 2 weeks ago even though he arrived late (3 days) and pretty beat up. He had 2 broken limbs and most of the dirt in the pot wasn't around his root ball I planted him anyway and is making a good recovery with new growth showing. I am satisfied with this tree and the hardiness at the recovery Methley is making.

Plumb tickled with plum trees

this was a second order for me. I ordered nearly two dozen trees of various kinds in my first order. The service was excellent and trees arrived timely and in good condition. Some were taller than expected and they are all in the ground. I expect to order more in the fall.
