Description

The AU Cherry Plum is a remarkable hybrid developed by Auburn University, designed specifically for the southeastern U.S. With its outstanding disease resistance and early ripening, this plum variety is an excellent choice for home gardeners. The fruit features dark red skin and juicy flesh, offering a cherry-like sweetness that is perfect for fresh eating. Its compact size and ornamental spring blooms make it an attractive addition to any landscape.

Key Features:

  • Cherry-Like Fruit: Dark red, small, and firm plums with sweet red flesh and exceptional flavor.

  • Early Harvest: Matures 2 weeks after Methley, with harvest from late June to early July.

  • Highly Disease-Resistant: Resistant to bacterial canker, leaf spot, and plum leaf scald, making it ideal for disease-prone areas.

  • Self-Fruitful: No need for another variety to set fruit, though cross-pollination can improve yields.

  • Vigorous Growth: Known for strong, disease-resistant growth in warm climates, producing consistent, high yields.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 12–15 feet

  • Spread: 12–15 feet

  • Growth Rate: Moderate

USDA Hardiness Zones:

  • Zones: 7–9

Care Instructions:

  • Sunlight: Full sun (6+ hours daily) for optimal fruiting and flowering.

  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0 is ideal.

  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season, especially during fruit development.

  • Pruning: Light pruning in late winter to maintain structure and improve airflow.

  • Pollination: Cross-pollination with another Japanese plum, such as Methley or AU Rosa, is beneficial for increased yield, but the tree is self-fruitful.

Landscape Uses:

  • Perfect for home orchards or small garden spaces.

  • Combines ornamental beauty with edible fruit.

  • Great for fresh eating, preserving, or making small-batch jams and jellies.

With its early harvest, disease resistance, and compact growth, the AU Cherry Plum is an excellent addition to Southern gardens, providing a reliable and flavorful fruiting tree that thrives even in challenging climates.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

To encourage a vigorous and high yielding plum tree, thin the tree's fruit in May and again in July, removing the damaged and diseased fruit so that the rest have room to grow. Prune plum trees in the winter. Regularly remove suckers from around the base of the tree.
