Blueberry - Sweetheart (Hybrid Highbush)
USDA Hardiness Zones: 5-8.
Description
The Sweetheart Blueberry is a standout highbush variety known for its unique ability to produce two harvests in a single year! It is considered a hybrid of both Northern and Southern Highbush blueberry varieties, meaning it is a cross between the two types, not strictly one or the other; it combines the best characteristics of both to produce a large yield of sweet berries across a wider climate range.
With its sweet, firm berries and vigorous growth, this versatile variety is perfect for home gardeners and commercial growers looking for consistent performance and abundant yields.
Key Features:
- Double Harvest: Produces a main crop in mid-summer and, under optimal conditions, a second crop in the fall, giving you twice the enjoyment from one plant.
- Exceptional Flavor: Large, firm berries with a perfectly sweet taste—delicious for fresh eating, baking, or freezing.
- Cold Hardy & Heat Tolerant: Thrives in USDA Zones 5–8, making it suitable for a range of climates, from cooler northern regions to mild southern areas.
- Vigorous Growth: A robust, easy-to-grow plant with high yields and excellent disease resistance.
Maturity Size:
- Height: 4–6 feet
- Width: 3–4 feet
Care Instructions:
- Soil: Prefers acidic, well-drained soil with a pH of 4.5–5.5. Enrich the planting area with organic matter for healthy growth.
- Sunlight: Requires full sun for the best fruit production and overall plant vigor.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during flowering and fruiting periods. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
- Pollination: While self-fertile, Sweetheart benefits from cross-pollination with other northern highbush varieties like Legacy or Bluecrop for increased yields.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove weak or dead wood, encouraging strong, productive growth.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch to conserve soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds.
Why Choose Sweetheart Blueberry?
The Sweetheart Blueberry is a dream for gardeners who want more out of their blueberry bushes. Its ability to produce two harvests in a single year sets it apart from other varieties, providing you with more delicious berries to enjoy. Combined with its excellent flavor, high productivity, and adaptability, Sweetheart is the perfect addition to any garden or berry patch.

How to Plant

STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
