Description

A Narrow, Upright Japanese Maple with Deep Red Foliage and Strong Vertical Form

The Twombly’s Red Sentinel Japanese Maple is a distinctive ornamental tree prized for its narrow, upright habit and rich red foliage. Unlike spreading Japanese maples, this cultivar grows in a columnar form, making it ideal for tight spaces, entryways, and vertical accents in the landscape. Its deep burgundy-red leaves emerge in spring, hold color well through summer, and finish with brilliant crimson tones in fall, delivering multi-season interest with a refined silhouette.

Key Features:

  • Upright, Columnar Habit: Naturally narrow growth makes it perfect for small gardens, walkways, and tight landscape spaces.

  • Rich Red Foliage: Deep red leaves provide bold color from spring through fall.

  • Excellent Fall Color: Transitions to vivid crimson-red in autumn for a dramatic seasonal display.

  • Space-Saving Design: Ideal for landscapes where width is limited but height is desired.

  • Low Maintenance Ornamental: Requires minimal pruning to maintain its clean, vertical form.

Mature Size:

  • Height: 10–15 feet

  • Spread: 4–8 feet

  • Growth Rate: Moderate

USDA Hardiness Zones:
Zones: 5–9

Care Instructions:

  • Sunlight: Prefers partial shade to full sun; afternoon shade is beneficial in warmer climates.

  • Soil: Grows best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter.

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during establishment and periods of heat.

  • Pruning: Minimal pruning required; remove dead or crossing branches in late winter if needed.

  • Pollination: Not required.

Landscape Uses:

  • Perfect for narrow garden spaces, entryways, and along walkways.

  • Excellent as a vertical accent or focal point in modern and traditional landscapes.

  • Ideal for patios, courtyards, and foundation plantings where space is limited.

The Twombly’s Red Sentinel Japanese Maple offers dramatic red foliage in a sleek, upright form that sets it apart from traditional Japanese maples. Its space-saving habit, strong seasonal color, and refined structure make it an outstanding choice for gardeners seeking elegance without sacrificing valuable landscape space.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Maples grow best in full sun to partial shade, with afternoon shade recommended in warmer climates. Staking is only necessary if the tree is planted in a windy location or is unstable after planting. Choose a site with adequate space for the tree’s mature size. Apply a 2–4 inch layer of mulch, keeping it several inches away from the trunk. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish roots. Fertilize lightly in early spring if needed, and prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove dead wood.
