Apple Trees - King Luscious
USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-8.
Description
The King Luscious Apple is a distinguished variety celebrated for its exceptionally large fruit, rich flavor, and crisp texture. Originating from North Carolina, this variety produces apples that can weigh nearly a pound each — living up to its “King” title. The fruit combines sweetness with a pleasant tang, making it ideal for fresh eating, baking, and cider. Its attractive red-striped skin and creamy white flesh make it as beautiful as it is delicious, and it performs well in cooler climates with reliable annual crops.
Key Features
• Exceptional Size: Bears extra-large apples, often up to one pound each — among the largest of any dessert apple variety.
• Rich, Balanced Flavor: Offers a superb sweet-tart flavor with aromatic undertones, excellent for fresh eating or cooking.
• Crisp, Juicy Flesh: Firm, fine-grained flesh retains its crunch and juiciness long after harvest.
• Attractive Appearance: Red-striped skin over a yellow background gives each apple striking visual appeal.
• Late-Season Harvest: Ripens in early to mid-fall, extending the apple season for home growers.
Mature Size
• Height: 12–15 feet (standard); 8–10 feet (semi-dwarf)
• Spread: 10–15 feet
• Growth Rate: Moderate
USDA Hardiness Zones
• Zones 4–8
Chill Hours
• Requires approximately 700–800 chill hours for optimal flowering and fruiting.
Care Instructions
• Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily) for best fruit color and sugar development.
• Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile loam with pH between 6.0 and 7.0; amend clay soils with compost for improved drainage.
• Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during fruit development and dry spells; mulch to retain soil moisture.
• Pruning: Prune annually in late winter to shape the canopy, remove crowded limbs, and encourage strong fruiting wood.
• Pollination: Requires cross-pollination with another mid- to late-blooming variety such as ‘Fuji,’ ‘Honeycrisp,’ or ‘Granny Smith’ for maximum yield.
Landscape Uses
• Excellent choice for home orchards, edible landscapes, or small farm production.
• Ideal for fresh eating, pies, cider, and applesauce.
• Provides four-season beauty with spring blossoms, lush summer foliage, bright fall fruit, and graceful winter form.
The King Luscious Apple lives up to its majestic name with its grand size, delicious flavor, and orchard-worthy performance. A true standout among late-season varieties, it rewards growers with a bountiful harvest of impressive, flavorful apples that shine fresh from the tree or in homemade desserts.

How to Plant

STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
