Description
The Red Althea (Hibiscus syriacus) is a stunning deciduous shrub known for its vibrant, showy red blooms and hardy nature. This flowering shrub adds a bold splash of color to gardens, with large, trumpet-shaped flowers that attract pollinators and make a dramatic statement in landscapes. Perfect for hedges, borders, or as a specimen plant, the Red Althea offers both ornamental beauty and ease of care, making it a must-have for any garden enthusiast.
Unique Features:
- Vibrant Red Blooms: Produces large, striking red flowers from mid-summer to fall, creating a dramatic and colorful display.
- Attracts Pollinators: The large, open blooms attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, adding life and movement to your garden.
- Hardy and Low Maintenance: Tolerates a range of soil types and growing conditions, making it ideal for beginner gardeners and established landscapes.
- Long Blooming Period: Blooms consistently throughout the summer and into the fall, ensuring a prolonged display of color.
Mature Size:
- Height: 10–15 feet
- Spread: 6–10 feet
USDA Hardiness Zones:
- Zones 7–9
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers full sun to part shade, with full sun providing the best blooming potential.
- Soil: Thrives in well-drained, loamy or sandy soils. Can tolerate a variety of soil conditions, including moderately dry soil.
- Water: Water regularly during the first few years of growth, especially during dry periods. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires less frequent watering.
- Pruning: Prune in early spring to remove any dead or damaged wood and shape the plant. Deadheading spent blooms can encourage more flowers, but this shrub naturally blooms on new wood.
- Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and abundant blooms.
- Pests/Disease: Generally pest-resistant but monitor for aphids or Japanese beetles. Use an organic insecticide if necessary, and ensure proper air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
The Red Althea is a perfect addition to any garden looking for an eye-catching shrub with minimal care requirements. Its long-lasting blooms, vibrant red color, and ability to attract pollinators make it a fantastic choice for gardeners of all experience levels. Add this beautiful and hardy shrub to your landscape for a burst of color that lasts throughout the growing season.

How to Plant

STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
