Description

The Morning Star Althea (Hibiscus syriacus 'Morning Star') is an elegant and eye-catching Rose of Sharon variety, admired for its crisp white flowers highlighted by a deep magenta-red center. This deciduous shrub brings brightness and sophistication to the landscape, making it an excellent choice for specimen planting, decorative borders, or privacy hedges. With its extended bloom season and easy-care requirements, it adds dependable beauty to gardens from midsummer through fall.

Unique Features:
Distinctive Blooms: Large pure white flowers accented with a vivid magenta-red eye create a refined and dramatic focal point.
Pollinator-Friendly: Attracts hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees, helping sustain a healthy and active garden.
Long Blooming Period: Produces abundant blossoms from midsummer to early fall, adding consistent color for weeks.
Heat and Drought Tolerant: Performs well in warm climates and tolerates dry spells once established.

Mature Size:
Height: 8–12 feet
Spread: 6–8 feet

USDA Hardiness Zones:
Zones 5–8

Care Instructions:
Light: Requires full sun to part shade; 6+ hours of daily sun encourages the heaviest blooms.
Soil: Adapts to many soil types but thrives in fertile, well-drained soil.
Water: Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it tolerates moderate drought but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry weather.
Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and encourage strong new growth, as flowers bloom on new wood.
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring for vigorous growth and prolific flowering.
Pests/Disease: Naturally resistant to most pests and diseases. Ensure proper air circulation and monitor for occasional issues such as aphids or Japanese beetles, treating with organic solutions if needed.

The Morning Star Althea is perfect for gardeners looking for a blend of purity and contrast. Its radiant white petals with a bold red center, combined with its resilient and low-maintenance nature, make it a versatile and striking addition to any garden setting.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
