Description

The Bluejay Blueberry is a reliable northern highbush variety prized for its vigorous growth, flavorful berries, and excellent cold hardiness. Ideal for both new and experienced growers, Bluejay offers dependable yields, strong disease resistance, and beautiful seasonal color, making it a standout choice for home gardens and small orchards.

Key Features:

  • Excellent Flavor: Produces medium to large berries with a mild, sweet taste and firm texture—perfect for fresh eating, baking, or freezing.
  • Heavy Producer: A mid-season variety known for abundant, consistent harvests year after year.
  • Cold Hardy: Performs exceptionally well in USDA Zones 4–7, thriving in cooler northern climates.
  • Ornamental Appeal: Bright green summer foliage transitions to warm yellow-orange tones in the fall, adding landscape beauty.

Maturity Size:

  • Height: 5–7 feet
  • Width: 4–6 feet

Care Instructions:

  • Soil: Prefers acidic, well-drained soil with a pH of 4.5–5.5. Incorporate pine bark or peat moss to improve acidity and structure.
  • Sunlight: Full sun is recommended for maximum berry size, sweetness, and productivity.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the growing and fruiting season; avoid standing water.
  • Pollination: Although self-fertile, Bluejay yields best when planted with another northern highbush blueberry such as Patriot, Duke, or Arlen.
  • Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove older canes and encourage strong new productive growth.
  • Mulching: Apply a 2–3 inch mulch layer to maintain soil moisture, acidity, and weed suppression.

Why Choose Bluejay Blueberry?

The Bluejay Blueberry offers a dependable combination of productivity, hardiness, and mild, delicious flavor. Its vigorous growth and strong fall color make it as ornamental as it is fruitful, while its reliability has made it a favorite northern highbush variety across cooler growing regions.

How to Plant
STEP 1) First, decide on a planting location. Consider carefully what kind of sun, soil, and growing-space your tree or shrub will need.
STEP 2) Once you've located the perfect spot, the hole you are digging must be at least double the width and as deep as the root system you are planting.
STEP 3) Remove the plant from the pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root system should be level with the ground. Before placing the tree or shrub in the hole, use your hands to gently break up the root system.
STEP 4) Once the plant is in place, backfill the hole with native soil and any leftover potting material.
STEP 5) Pack down the soil to eliminate any air pockets.
STEP 6) When finished, water thoroughly.
Care Guide

Blueberries need lots of sunlight and slightly acidic soil in order to thrive. If you want to create a hedgerow, plant blueberries 2-3 feet apart. Once planted, mulch 2-4 inches over roots. Heavily prune blueberries each year to encourage higher yields once the plant is established.
